SAVI-Interactive Web Site Disclaimer and Acceptable Use Policy

The Disclaimer and Acceptable Use Policy appears when a new user clicks on the New User Registration link at the top of the website, or if a user clicks on the Disclaimer link at the bottom left of the navigation bar. Once a user becomes a Registered User, he or she will no longer see theDisclaimer and Acceptable Use Policy.

Since you are new to SAVI-Interactive, please review the information and, at the bottom of the screen, click on either the Accept button to accept the terms of agreement or Decline button to reject the terms of agreement. You may need to scroll down to the bottom of the webpage to see the buttons.

If you accept the terms you will be able to continue using the full SAVI-Interactive website including the Data & Mapping area. If you decline, then you will not be able to access the Add My Own Data area of the website or be able to save your work.


Become a Registered SAVI-Interactive User
To begin:

Click on New User Registration in the upper-right corner of the website…

Review the SAVI Interactive Web Site Disclaimer and Acceptable Use Policy and click the Accept button to proceed.

Fill out the registration form noting the required fields with an * next to them. Scroll down the page to show the entire form.

Click the submit button at the bottom of the form to finish the registration process. After a successful submission you will see a confirmation page:

Why Become a Registered User?

Registered users can:

  • Use the My SAVI area of the website,
  • Add their own data to SAVI, and
  • Save data, maps, and queries for use in future SAVI work sessions.

Data Cart

SAVI uses a Data Cart to store all of your data selections, maps, and queries. It works like a shopping cart in a grocery store, except you do not have to pay - it's FREE. You can create multiple carts - one for each project you are working on.

Saving Data

An unregistered user can view and query data, maps, and tables, but cannot save any work. A user can choose to save the data at any time, but if unregistered, the user is presented with the Welcome to SAVI-Interactive login screen. Only Registered Users can SAVE data. (Note: Data are saved in a Data Cart. See What is a Data Cart?)

A Registered User enjoys the advantage of using the saved data in future SAVI-Interactive work sessions.

Once you have selected the data and added it to the Data Cart, you can revise and save it to the Data Cart on any section of the Data & Mapping area by clicking on the Save Data Cart icon found in the upper left of the screen.

REMEMBER: You must be a registered SAVI-Interactive user, and you must have selected and added data to the Data Cart in order to save data in a Data Cart.

Be sure to save your work! SAVI does not automatically save your changes.

A Registered User can access saved data in the My SAVI>Saved Work>My Data Carts area of the website after Logging In to SAVI-Interactive or by clickong on the Open Saved Data Cart icon found in the upper left of the screen.

What is a Data Cart?

In SAVI-Interactive, imagestores the data you have selected and used throughout the website while you are still working with the website. It is also possible to SAVE the data in the Data Cart and use it again when you return to SAVI-Interactive at a later time. ALL SAVI-Interactive data is FREE! The Data Cart is not used to check-out or buy data. It is simply used to hold and save data for the user.

Using the Data Cart means:

Your data selections will be stored during each working session.

Clicking on theimage icon in the upper left of the screen allows you to Save data to the Data Cart for future use.

A Data Cart is a collection of related data. Users can have multiple Data Carts in their workspace (e.g., one for each project). See How do I manage - Save, Delete and Modify - my SAVI-Interactive data? for more information about the Data Cart.

You can access the Data Cart under the appropriate tab in the Data & Mapping area.

You can access your saved data carts by clicking on the Open Saved Data Carts icon in the upper left corner.

You can access your saved data carts through the M SAVI option on the left navigation menu.

  • If you are not already Logged In to SAVI-Interactive, log in by clicking on theimage link at the top of the screen, entering your Username and Password, and then clicking the Log In button.
  • Click on My SAVI in the navigation bar at the left side of the web page, and then click Saved Work.
  • Click the My Data Carts option as shown in the above image.
  • When you have saved Data Carts, you will see a screen similar to the following:

In My SAVI, as a Registered User you will see a list of data carts. You can either:

  1. View a Data Cart:
    Click on the View Data Cart link will show you the data items saved in the Data Cart.
  2. You will be taken to your data cart, which lists all of the data items and queries in your cart.

If you have registered and do not have data saved in a Data Cart, you will see the following message:

2. Delete a Data Cart. Click Delete Data Cart next to the cart you want to delete.


Registered User

Now that you are a registered user, you can save and manage the data in your Data Cart in the My Data Cart area of the SAVI-Interactive website.

When you are finished with your work session, you can save the data in your Data Cart to be used in your next work session by using the Save Data Cart icon as previously described and then clicking on the Log out link at the top of the SAVI-Interactive website.

Using SAVI-Interactive Data and Mapping

Click on the image option on the left navigation menu.
You are taken to the Quick Data Select screen.

To Begin:

Step 1 of 5: Choose a Category (highlighted in yellow).

  • Choose the type of data you would like to map.
  • The page redisplays showing the choices under Step 2 of 5.
  • Step 2 of 5: Choose One Item.

  • Choose the individual data you would like to map.
  • The page redisplays highlighting Step 3 of 5.
  • Step 3 of 5: Choose a Geography Level.

    • A geography level is the geographic units by which data are summarized.
    • Select a geography for your map from the drop down menu 'Please Select'.
    • The page redisplays highlighting Step 4 of 5.

    Step 4 of 5.

    • Click on the Add To Data Cart button to add the data you just selected to your Data Cart.
      • The page redisplays highlighting Step 5 of 5.

      • The following screen will appear:

    Step 5 of 5: Continue adding data or select one of the following:

  • The Map It button creates a map using the data you selected.
  • The View Table button shows you the data you just selected in a list (table) format.
  • The Search Data button allows you to search for more data.

  • Looking at SAVI-Interactive data in table format (list)


    After adding data to your Data Cart, click on the Tables tab.image

    Step 1: Choose the type of data you want to view.

    • Choose a type of data from the list.
    • Depending on what types of data you may have placed in your cart the list will look something like the following:
    • image

    • Data Summaries: data summarized by geographical units (e.g., crimes summarized by township, high school dropouts summarized by school corporation).
    • Sites, Programs, and Agencies: community assests such as libraries, schools, days cares, youth programs, etc.
    • Boundaries: geographical areas such as service areas, neighborhoods, and census boundaries
    • Queries: inquiries you have made for specific data (e.g., Find a school with a specific name, Find all school corporations with high school dropout rates).


    • Click the Next button.

    Step 2: Choose the geography level.

  • Choose the geographic reporting unit by which you want the data summarized.
  • Click the Next button.
  • Step 3: Choose the data items you want in your list.

  • If not already checked, select the check box of the item you would like to see listed in your table.
  • You can select multiple items.
  • Click on the Show Table button to show the data selections you just completed in a table.
  • You are now ready to download the table if you choose to do so.

  • Asking a detailed question - Querying data

    After adding data to your Data Cart, click on the Queries tab.

    Note the orange Example box that is available on the screen to assist you with creating a query.

    Step 1: Choose one of the following:

    • Find a site, program, or agency based on its name (e.g., FindGeorge Washington Community School)
    • Find an area (geographic boundary) based on its name or identifier (e.g., Find Martindale-Brightwood Neighborhood)
    • Find areas based on socio-economic characteristics (e.g., Find school corporations with a high drop-out rate)

    • Click the Next button.
    • The remainder of the example assumes that you chose "Find areas based on socio-economic characteristics" in Step 1.

    Step 2: Choose the socio-economic characteristic you wish to use to find areas.

    • Select the data item you want to use in the query.
      The choices you are given will be based on the contents of your data cart.

    • Choose All Low Weight Births (Under 88 oz) (2000 Census Tracts) and click the Next button.

    Step 3: Fill in the blanks and click Next.

    • Specify your question (search criteria) by selecting options from the dropdown boxes and typing in the blanks.

    • Click the Next button.

    • Type in a name for your query that describes the kind of data and characteristics your query found.
    • This name will appear on your maps and in tables.

    • The query is added to your Data Cart. Try to name it so you can remember what data is in the query. Once the data is added to your Data Cart you will be able to use the query in other maps you create, too.

    • Click the Find button to get the data.

    • Click the Show Map button to show these results on a map.

    • If you already have data in your Data Cart, you may see that data on the map with your new query data, too.


    Finding Information on SAVI:
    You can find data in SAVI-Interactive 4 ways:

    • Quick Data Selection
      This will give you quick access to the most frequently requested data items under each of seven data categories.
    • Click Data & Mapping on the menu at the left side of the SAVI-Interactive website.
    • Click on the Quick Data Select tab along the top of the new screen.
    • Complete Steps 1 thru 5 in the Quick Data Select tab.
    • Data Search by Keyword
      This will allow you to search all of the SAVI data by keyword.
    • Click Data & Mapping on the menu at left side of the SAVI-Interactive website.
    • Click the Data Search tab along the top of the new screen.
    • Choose the Keyword option.
    • Enter a keyword and click the Search button.
    • Select a data item from the list and follow the instructions.
    • Data Search by Category
      This will allow you to search the SAVI data by category. The SAVI data are categorized into seven major categories and the 5 levels of subcategories (e.g., demographics>age)
    • Click Data & Mapping on the menu at the left side of the SAVI-Interactive website.
    • Click the Data Search tab along the top of the new screen.
    • Choose the Category option.
    • Choose a category from the first dropdown menu.
    • Complete Steps 1-3 until you see the data item for which you are looking.
    • Select a data item from the list and follow the instructions.
    • Website Search
      Located in the upper-right corner of the site
    • Searches for reports and data in SAVI.
    • Enter a keyword in the search box and click GO.
