Kandris Leading Course at United Way of Central Indiana’s Fall Community Impact University

Sharon Kandris, Director of Community Informatics, will be leading a required course of United Way of Central Indiana’s Fall Community Impact University program for United Way of Central Indiana area directors on November 4. The special class, “SAVI Community Assessment Tool Training Workshop,” will provide an overview of SAVI and discuss community assessments and online resources to help attendees and their agencies understand more about their service areas, identify needs, and find existing resources and collaborators in their communities. The program will also explore the latest SAVI tool to be launched in December, the United Way Community Assessment & Planning tool.  At last count, registration was at about 50 attendees, which besides directors includes other United Way team members who will be able to make use of the tools.

Sharon Kandris, Director of Community Informatics, is presenting at the National Legal Aid and Deference Association conference in Indianapolis on November 11. The association and conference are targeted to civil legal aid, indigent defense, and public interest law communities responding to the legal needs of people with low income. The workshop, “Legal Service Data in Context: Leveraging Public Data for Community Needs Assessments and Planning,” features demonstrations of the IndyVitals and SAVI Community Assessment tools and is an opportunity for attendees to discover how to address the information needs of legal service program directors. Other panelists include staff from US Office of Data Governance and Analysis, Indiana Legal Services, Pine Tree Legal Assistance, and Legal Services Corporation.

WFYI Public Radio and online to hear Sharon Kandris, Director of Community Informatics and SAVI, talk about the new online neighborhood tool IndyVitals! Other guests include Brad Beaubien, Long Range Planning Administrator, Dept. of Metropolitan Development, City of Indianapolis, and Steven Meyer, Executive Director, King Park Development Corporation.

IndyVitals, which is powered by SAVI, has been getting some legs with the media recently! Other mentions include:

  • IndyVitals was featured on the front page of the Indy Star Friday, July 1, and online here.  This is the third time a Polis project has been featured on p. 1 (Encyclopedia of Indianapolis and Spirit & Place were the others.)
  • Kandris was featured in FOX59 interviews discussing the IndyVitals on June 29;
  • Channel 6 taped the June 30 SAVI Talks! event which included an interview with Kandris;
  • Ric Burrous with IU Communications is interviewing Kandris about the IndyVitals tool for the July Insights to Innovation newsletter, Innovate Indiana’s monthly e-newsletter for economic development and technology commercialization information.
  • Sam Stall with the IUPUI alumni magazine has published the article, By the Numbers. The piece focuses on two areas at IUPUI that deal with Big Data: the Polis Center’s SAVI program and how it helps individuals and organizations identify patterns, assets, gaps, and trends in a variety of ways and the IU Fairbanks School of Public Health.
